PORTLAND, Ore. -- On a tumultuous day for Portland basketball fans, the last announcement was perhaps the least surprising but the most disappointing.

On the same day the Blazers fired Coach Nate McMillan and traded two of their top players, they also waived Greg Oden.

Oden had not appeared in a Blazers game in two years.

The decision to waive the injury-plagued center marked the end of the rocky road for the big man the Blazers hoped would be the center of their franchise.

15,000 fans mobbed Pioneer Courthouse Square to welcome Oden to Portland when the Blazers selected him as the first pick in the NBA draft in 2007.

Oden showed flashes of promise when he played. But in the end, he spent far more time in rehabilitation than on the court.

In February, Oden underwent his fifth surgery being drafted by the Blazers, and was officially listed as out for the 2012 season.

Oden has appeared in just 82 career games for the Blazers, averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.
