TUALATIN, Ore. - It was a beautiful summer day in Portland and the Blazers were introducing their three Draft picks, Damian Lillard, Meyers Leonard and Will Barton at the Children's Museum.
Former Blazers President Larry Miller was there as well. He was smiling and talking about his time with the team and his decision to step down as Blazers President, and return to Nike as the President of Jordan Brand.
"The Jordan Brand was my baby." Says Miller, "I helped to get it started. I feel like if I can help take that to the next level, that was the deciding factor for me. All the talk about political stuff , there's none of that. Neil Olshey, to me, is the right guy for this team, at the right time. He is the right General Manager for this organization."
Olshey, who took over as GM last month, was at the news conference as well and had praise for Miller.
"Larry's the perfect President ," says Olshey, "because he knows basketball. He knows how important it is. He does everything on the business and makes sure we have all the resources we need, but he's also got major connections. There's always a value add with Larry because he brings more to the table than just a guy, who ran the organization."
Miller spent five years as President of the Blazers and helped the team get back to the playoffs three straight seasons.
They have also racked up 192 consecutive sellouts. Miller says he won't miss the limelight and feels he is leaving with the Blazers with the organization going in the right direction.
"To me, one of the things that I feel really good about," says Miller, "Is the fact that the fans are re-engaged with this team now, supporting the team. The sellout streak is intact and I think it's going to continue to be."
