LONDON -- Playing for France in the Olympics, Trail Blazers forward Nicholas Batum punched an opponent in the crotch during the quarterfinal game against Spain Wednesday.

Batum wound up and swung at Juan Carlos Navarro and grabbed his shirt with less than a minute left in the game. A team shouting match followed which almost erupted into a fight.

The punch earned a foul and Navarro made one of the free throws.  Spain ended up winning the game 66-59.

In his post-game comments, Batum said he believes Spain tanked its final preliminary game against Brazil so it could face France in the quarterfinals and he wanted to give Navarro "a good reason to flop."

Batum later issued this apology on Twitter: "I want to apologize for my stupid act at the end, I showed a bad image of France and myself, Congrats to team Spain. Still proud of my team and teamates, we gave the best from ourselves for our country. Now I cheers for the women bball team!"
