Shhh! Don’t talk to Chris Bowling. You just might jinx the perfect season he’s pitching.

The Portland computer software programmer has attended two Mariner games this season. Both of which resulted in perfect games. Even a computer guy couldn’t compute those odds!

“People in my office have said it’s like winning the lottery and getting struck by lightning twice,” said Bowling. “To see one is humbling, but to see two is truly amazing.”

Bowling was raised in Corvallis, then spent a brief time working in southern California before returning to Oregon. Had the Portland Beavers remained in town, his two perfect days at Safeco Field may not have materialized.

“I was trying to get to games ever since (returning to Portland)," said Bowling, “so whenever I’ve had the chance I’d try to make it to the Mariners, and I’ve had those two opportunities this year. So far, I’m two for two.”

The first gem was pitched by Chicago’s Phillip Humber in April. The second was the flawless effort Felix Hernandez put forth this month.

Perfection came in more ways than one.

“It was my first game with my son, so it’s something I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.”

Bowling has saved the ticket stubs from both games, along with the certificate his son received from the team for attending his first Mariners’ game. He also has another keepsake from his perfect summer.

“Some of the guys at work made a poster.” He explained it’s a play on the Most Interesting Man in the World ad campaign by Dos Equis beer. The poster reads, “I don’t always make it to baseball games, but when I do they’re perfect.”

54 up, 54 down. If you’re keeping score, Chris Bowling is pitching a perfect season.
