The Portland Winterhawks (3-2-0-1) fell 6-2 in Kelowna Friday in a road contest against the Rockets (4-0-0-1).
Alex Schoenborn opened the scoring 4:41 into the game to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead, his fourth goal of the season. Kelowna tied it midway through the frame when Myles Bell scored to make it 1-1, which remained the score through the end of the period.
Bell struck again 6:34 into the second on a power play to give the Kelowna a 2-1 lead, followed by a goal from Nick Merkley at the 18:11 mark as the Rockets took a 3-1 lead into the third.
Kelowna took a 4-1 lead when Riley Stadel scored a power play goal at the 10:15 mark of the third, but Portland got back within two when Taylor Leier scored at the 12:33 mark to make it 4-2. However, the Rockets added goals from Merkley, his second of the game, and Colton Heffley to pick up the 6-2 win.
Brendan Burke stopped 35 of the 41 Kelowna shots he faced. His counterpart, Jordon Cooke, stopped 41 of Portland’s 43 shots.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night once again in Kelowna.
