After an easy four game sweep of the Everett Silvertips in round one of the WHL playoffs, Portland ran into much tougher competition Thursday night against the Kelowna Rockets in game one of their second round series.

The Rockets beat the Winterhawks 5-1. Shane McColgan led Kelowna with a hat trick, scoring three straight goals in the first and second periods. Zak Stebner and Evan Bloodoff also scored goals for Kelowna. Troy Rutkowski scored the only goal for the Winterhawks at 7:08 in the first period off an assist by Nino Niederreiter.

The Winterhawks outshot the Rockets 46-36. Kelowna goalkeeper Adam Brown made 45 saves.

Attendance for the game was 5,272. Game two will be held Sunday night at the Rose Garden.
