PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The Portland Timbers have signed Haitian midfielder James Marcelin to a contract.

Marcelin played the past two seasons with the Puerto Rico Islanders. He returned home during the offseason and was in Haiti during the devastating earthquake. Marcelin and his family escaped without injury, and the 23-year-old has arrived in Oregon to start preparing for the 2010 season.

Marcelin has been on Haiti's national team since 2007.
