What do you think of the new name for the Rose Garden Arena: "Moda Center"
PORTLAND – Changes keep coming to the Rose Quarter. Earlier this year the Rose Garden changed its name to the Moda Center. Now a ‘who’s who’ of popular Portland restaurants is coming to the arena’s concourse.
“When I first moved here ten months ago and I walked the arena, I didn't feel a local food scene in here at all,” said Blazers President Chris McGowan.
McGowan decided the arena needed a "menu makeover” and working with Levy Restaurants, the Moda Center's food partner, they brought in four local restaurants; Sizzle Pie, Bunk Sandwiches, Killer Burger and Fire on the Mountain.
Fire on the Mountain owner Jordan Busch is busy getting his operation up and running. He said his Moda Center location will soon look like his standalone shops.
“We're going to do wings, boneless wings, fresh cut fries, deep fried pickles, chips and queso,” Busch said.
Most restaurants will offer a pared down menu to help provide faster service.
“There's a lot of challenges in figuring out how much food to have ready,” said Killer Burger owner, Robin McCrary. “We need to have the food produced much faster than we do at our current locations. It's a whole new system.”
Owners said it should be worth the trouble.
“We're excited to draw a different crowd; people who haven't been to our restaurants or haven’t heard of us yet,” Busch said.
McGowan wants to be supportive of the small businesses and said restaurants will have a reasonable revenue split with the Moda Center.
“We want to make sure restaurants have a good chance to come in here and be successful,” McGowan said. “It's different than running a restaurant out in the city.”
The biggest challenge will fall on Blazers fans when they have to decide where to eat.
