It’s the kind of moment that dreams are made of, a last second shot. It happened to Evergreen Forward Robert Franks, who hit a crazy shot at the buzzer to force overtime with Camas in a District playoff game. Evergreen was down two to Camas and had to go the length of the court in about 2 seconds. Plainsmen Guard Connor Finnegan inbounded the ball to Franks, who bobbled It and then threw the ball over his shoulder at the basket. Before practice the following day, Franks reflected on the moment.
“I couldn’t gather it and shoot it right,” says Franks, “ so I just flung it and it felt like it had a chance to go in when it left my hands and I looked back and everybody’s going wild.”
Yes they were and why not, the basket tied the game at 63 forcing overtime. With momentum on their side, Evergreen went on to win the game 74-68 to live for another playoff game. “The craziest I’ve ever been around,” says head coach Brian Witherspoon, “the craziest I’ve ever seen in person.” Finnegan had a similar feeling, “It was pretty incredible, says Finnegan, “unbelievable, It didn’t seem real.”
Needless to say, talk about the shot came up a lot during the school day. “Just walking around, it’s like, congratulations, big shot, stuff like that.” says Franks, adding. “Teachers were showing it to like, almost every class, so, it’s nice.” “I didn’t get a chance to see it last night,” Witherspoon says of the video replay of the shot, “and I saw it today and I watched it like three times and every time I just, had to just at it. It was crazy.”
