The University of Oregon football program has agreed to part ways with running back Dontae Williams. The true freshman did not appear in any games in the Ducks run to a Pac-10 Championship and appearance in the BCS National Championship Game.

According to a release from the University of Oregon, Williams made the request to transfer, which was granted by Head Coach Chip Kelly. Today’s brief statement did not mention a reason for Williams’ request or where he will play next season. With the return of Heisman Trophy finalist LaMichael James in 2011 and the continued presence of standout sophomore Kenjon Barner, Williams would struggle to get much playing time next fall.

Oregon recently wrapped up a recruiting class widely considered among the best in team history. That includes five-star recruit De’Anthony Thomas out of Los Angeles, who announced his desire to play running back at Oregon.
