VICTORIA, B.C. -- The Portland Winterhawks (26-12-3-2) picked up a point in the standings but were topped 3-2 in Victoria Friday by the Royals (29-14-0-2) in the first of back-to-back games between the teams.
Nic Petan opened the scoring for Portland with a power play goal 8:48 into the first for a 1-0 lead. Victoria evened it at the 14:50 mark on a goal by Ben Walker to make it 1-1 going into the second period.
The game remained tied until the 16:51 mark of the second when Brendan Leipsic scored a power play goal to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead going into the third.
Victoria got the equalizer 6:42 into the third on a power play goal from Steven Hodges to make it 2-2, and it remained that way through regulation, setting up overtime.
Neither team was able to score in the extra frame, so the game went to a shootout, where Victoria’s Jack Walker scored the lone goal to give the Royals the 3-2 win.
Corbin Boes got the start in net, one day after being acquired by the Winterhawks in a trade with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and stopped 31 of 33 shots in his Portland debut. Coleman Vollrath stopped 38 of 40 Portland shots in the Royals’ win.
Petan, Leipsic and Derrick Pouliot all finished with two points in the loss.
Portland was 2-5 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill.
The Hawks and Royals meet again tomorrow night in Vancouver.
