CAMAS, Wash. -- Eugene may be known as Tracktown USA but one of the best young middle distance runners in the nation lives just a little more than 100 miles away, in Camas, Washington.
Alexa Efraimson started to focus on her running in her freshman year of high school. She's a junior at Camas High School now and taking the track and field world by storm.
Efraimson set a national record in the 1600 meters at the Washington State High School Championships. A few weeks later, she ran one of the fastest times ever for a high school runner in the 1500 meters. That was in a race filled with professional, world class runners.
"I was a little nervous, but excited, just because all the competition does bring out the best in me," she said. "Also, it was just such an amazing opportunity to learn and grow as a runner."
Efraimson is coached by Michael Hickey. He's worked with other talented runners before but knows what Efraimson is doing is remarkable.
"I didn't expect Alexa to be this good. I knew she'd be talented, knew she would be good, win a couple of state titles, not sure you can ever expect someone to be this good." Hickey said.
Efraimson will run the 1500 meters at the U.S. Outdoor Championships this week.
Later this summer, she'll try to make the U.S. Junior world team.
