LOS ANGELES (AP) — Embattled Southern California athletic director Mike Garrett is being replaced by another former Trojans football player. Pat Haden will take over Aug. 3. The former USC quarterback went on to a successful business career, and has been serving as a member of USC's board of trustees.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — It's back to the drawing board for Ilya Kovalchuk (EEL'-yah KOH'-vul-chook) and the New Jersey Devils. The NHL has rejected their 17-year, $102 million contract, saying it's designed to circumvent the league's salary cap.

CHICAGO (AP) — Lou Piniella (pihn-EHL'-uh) announced he'll be retiring as manager of the Cubs at the end of the season, and his team went out and blasted Houston 14-7. The 66-year-old Piniella has made five trips to the World Series, and has collected three championship rings during his 22 years as a big league skipper.

UNDATED (AP) — There are a half-dozen matinees on today's baseball schedule, with Chicago hosting Houston in the National League's only afternoon start. The American League offers up Tampa Bay at Baltimore, the L.A. Angels at the New York Yankees, Minnesota hosting Cleveland, Toronto at Kansas City and Oakland home to Boston.

PAU, France (AP) — It's the final rest day of the Tour de France, which finishes Sunday in Paris. Defending champion Alberto Contador of Spain holds an eight-second lead over Luxembourg's Andy Schleck.
