UNDATED (AP) — Ryan Braun is admitting taking performance-enhancing drugs during his NL MVP season of 2011. The suspended Milwaukee slugger says he took a cream and a lozenge containing banned substances while rehabilitating an injury, now calling it "a huge mistake for which I am deeply ashamed."

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)— Garrett Jones and Jordy Mercer hit second-inning home runs and Pittsburgh erupted with seven runs in the fifth inning in the Pirates' 10-5 win over San Francisco last night. The victory keeps the Pirates a game ahead of St. Louis in the National League Central.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals kept the heat on the Pirates by winning for the fifth time in six games, beating Atlanta 6-2 in the opener of a four-game weekend series at Busch Stadium. Matt Holiday had two doubles and David Freese (freez) drove in two runs.

NEW YORK (AP) — The red-hot New York Yankees have closed within three and a-half games of the final wild card spot in the American League. The Yanks endured a three and a-half hour rain delay to beat Toronto for the 10th straight time 5-3 for their fifth straight triumph overall, and 10th in their last 12 games.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has been fined $10,000 by the NFL for wearing unauthorized apparel, a T-shirt with "Operation Patience" on it. Griffin, who is recovering from a knee injury and yet to play in the preseason, wore the shirt on the field before Washington's exhibition game Monday night.
