Ore. singer preforms, delegates do commentary at RNC
11:11 PM EDT on Thursday, September 2, 2004
NEW YORK — Country singer Sara Evans, a part-time Oregon resident,
performed at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night.
Evans sang just before the keynote address by Georgia Sen. Zell Miller,
a Democrat who has endorsed President Bush.
Evans lives most of the year in Nashville, but she and her husband,
Craig Schelske, own a farm near Aumsville, southeast of Salem.
Schelske ran for the 5th Congressional District seat in 2002 but lost in
a GOP primary.
Ore. delegates provide analysis
Not content to rely on TV and newspaper coverage, two Oregon delegates
are providing their own analysis of the four-day convention.
Solomon Yue Jr., a Republican National Committee member from Salem, and
Jeff Grossman of Beaverton are providing daily commentary on Jayne
Carroll's talk show on KUIK-AM.
Yue and Grossman, chairman of the Washington County GOP, appear on the
Hillsboro station each Wednesday for a call-in segment titled "GOP
Grapevine." This week, the pair have called into the station from a
studio in Madison Square Garden, sharing their thoughts on the events of
the day and Oregon politics.
On Wednesday, as delegates mingled in a lounge nearby, Grossman and Yue
previewed Miller's speech, as well as the 31-member Oregon delegation's
impending vote for President Bush.
"We're very excited," Grossman told Carroll.
Yue, who was born in China, said he related to California Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger. "We're both immigrants," he said.
