Senate Iraq Hearings
General David Petraeus is expected to tell Senate Committees that last years surge of troops has helped calm some of the violence in war torn Iraq. But, troops will need to stay through the end of the year. The General testifies in the morning before the Armed Services Committee where John McCain and Hillary Clinton are members. In the afternoon he testifies before the Foreign Affairs Committee where Barack Obama is a member. However, it is not expected that Obama will get a chance to ask questions before 6:30pm EST. General Petraeus testified about the military situation last September. Since that time, support for the war, both publicly and politically, has continued to erode. We will also hear from Ambassador Ryan Crocker about the Iraqi political situation.

Unemployment Surges
The U.S. labor picture continues its decline battered by the economic slowdown. 80,000 jobs were lost in March, the third consecutive month of job losses. The Labor Department explains what's going on Friday, but three things are clear. Safe to Fly?
Is the flying public at risk due to lapses in aircraft inspections by major airlines? This is one of the concerns being raised on Capitol Hill during a hearing on airline safety. Whistleblowers, the executives from Southwest Airlines and the FAA will all be in the hot seat answering questions about cozy relationships between the airlines and some FAA inspectors. Congress will also address a lack of oversight by the Federal Aviation Administration in managing its own safety programs.

Campaign Follow
The Texas democratic debate is over, but Hillary Clinton and her chief rival, Barack Obama are still stumping for votes in the Lone Star state before making campaign swings through Ohio. Meanwhile, Republican candidate John McCain holds a rally in Indiana, still trying to play down the New York Times story on a possible relationship with a female lobbyist.

Satellite Down
The space shuttle Atlantis is now safely on the ground, clearing the way for the Navy to try and shoot down a crippled U.S. spy satellite. The first attempt seems likely to happen late tonight (10:30 p.m. EST / 7:30 p.m. PST) over the Pacific Ocean. The three-stage Navy missile will be fired from a Navy cruiser. The attempt will certainly help the military learn more about anti-satellite technology which has the Russians and Chinese governments on edge. Left alone, the satellite and it's ½ ton of toxic fuel, would reenter during the first week of March, and could scatter debris over a huge swath of the planet.

Fragile Economic Deal
The 150 billion dollar economic stimulus plan will pass the House of Representatives today. But there's already a battle staged in the Senate. Tomorrow, the Chair of the Senate Finance Committee will hold a vote on a competing Senate plan that would give $500-1000 rebates to a larger group of people…including older Social Security recipients and wealthier taxpayers.

Iran Sanctions
Today the U-S imposed sanctions on Qods Force Gen. Ahmed Foruzandeh for violence in Iraq. This is just one more sign of stepped up action against Iran - who recently exhibited what President Bush called provocative acts in the Strait of Hormuz by having small speed boats run towards three U-S Navy warships.
