Mike Goldfein - Television Correspondent
Mike Goldfein began his career in television in 1975 as a news photographer with KSTW-TV in Seattle. In this pre-video era, he was one of the last to cover news using a 16-millimeter film camera. In 1977, Mike moved in front of the camera, as a reporter with KREM-TV in Spokane. While there he covered the dramatic eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Two years later, he became an investigative reporter with KUTV-TV, then the NBC affiliate in Salt Lake City. His award winning stories exposed a Mafia lands swindle, as well as a medical clinic that was treating overweight patients with unproven and dangerous diet medications. In 1984, KUTV promoted Mike to manage the station's Washington Bureau. He has been a correspondent in the nation's capital ever since, joining Hearst Televsion in 1989 and Belo Broadcasting in 1994. Over his career, he has covered the Iran-Contra scandal, the Challenger and Columbia accidents, the first Gulf War, President Clinton's impeachment, John Glenn's return to space and numerous other Shuttle missions and major hurricanes. He was at the Pentagon on 9-11, and covered that day's horrific events just yards from the point of impact. He has also roamed the presidential campaign trail every four years and has covered each political convention since 1984. He has been awarded an Emmy for investigative journalism, as well as numerous awards for Journalism Excellence from Sigma Delta Chi. His documentaries have earned the Gold Award from the New York Films Festival and the Chicago Film Festival. In 1999 he was honored with a prestigious fellowship at the Jack R. Howard Science Institute at Caltech, and in 2001 a Case Technology Fellowship at The University of Maryland. Mike was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, and graduated with a BS in Political Science from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. His is married and the father of three children.
