Seahawks-Packers Notebook: Kampman adds 2 more sacks for Packers

11:14 PM PDT on Sunday, October 12, 2008

Associated Press

SEATTLE - When Aaron Kampman heard that Matt Hasselbeck wasn't going to play for Seattle on Sunday, the Green Bay defensive end immediately thought he'd have a better chance at some sacks.

Chalk up two more sacks and another three hits for Kampman after Sunday's 27-17 Packers' win.

"Well, obviously them being without someone with the ability and experience that Matt Hasselbeck has, that's a plus for us," Kampman said. "I thought to myself: 'It may an opportunity for me, where he's holding onto the ball longer.' We blitzed a little bit more today. We never let them get into a rhythm. That gave us the momentum defensively."

The Packers defense held Seattle to just 177 total yards and recorded three sacks on backup quarterback Charlie Frye. Green Bay also recorded another five hits on Frye and held Seattle to just 83 passing yards, the first time the Seahawks were held less than 100 yards passing for the first time since 2005 when the they had just 98 yards passing in a snowy 42-0 win in Philadelphia. It was the fewest passing yards for Seattle since 2001.

"Excellent performance from the defense today. We will take that every game," Packers' coach Mike McCarthy said. "It was what we needed as a team."

PICKED ON PRO BOWLER: Seattle CB Marcus Trufant definitely took notice that Green Bay was throwing in his direction a lot on Sunday.

"They made some plays on my side, so I guess you could say they were throwing at me," Trufant said. "They've got a lot of good receivers, they spread the ball around, but they made some key plays on my side of the field."

The move to throw at Trufant could be considered surprising, especially since Seattle went with backup Josh Wilson as its other starting cornerback on Sunday. But Trufant has not been at his best this season, a year after going to his first Pro Bowl and getting rewarded with a new contract that will pay him about $28 million in the first three years of his deal.

The Packers still decided to pick on Trufant, who finished with nine tackles, a sign of just how busy he was.

"You know, Marcus Trufant is a very good player, but we feel with the guys we've got we're not afraid to go at anyone," Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said.

Trufant was most noticeably beat on Greg Jennings' 45-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter that gave the Packers a 17-10 lead. Linebacker Lofa Tatupu tried to share some of the blame on the play -- a blitz by Seattle that left Trufant alone in man coverage -- but Trufant wasn't hearing it.

"I've got to be able to make the play. Everybody is in man coverage and we expect everyone to be able to hold up," Trufant said. "I've got to be accountable to hold up my end of the bargain and I've got to be able to make the play."

K-ROB'S RETURN: Koren Robinson made his return to the Seahawks lineup, playing in his first game for Seattle since its playoff loss to St. Louis in January 2005. Robinson came out to a raucous ovation during pre-game intros and caught his first pass on Seattle's second offensive play.

He finished with two catches for 23 yards.

"It was good, but you want to win and we weren't able to accomplish that," Robinson said.

QUICK HITS: Green Bay RB Ryan Grant had a career-high 33 carries, although he was held to 90 yards. He rushed for 201 yards and three TDs in Green Bay's playoff win over Seattle last January. ... Seattle S Deon Grant left in the first quarter with a knee injury, but returned and played most of the game. ... Green Bay RB Brandon Jackson came down with flu-like symptoms Saturday night and was inactive for the game. ... Seattle has been outscored 52-3 in the third quarter this season.
