MOUNT RAINIER, Wash. – Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Jim Mora, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and KING 5 Sports Director Paul Silvi are preparing to make their ascent to the top of the Evergreen State.

All three are part of a charity climb up Mount Rainier. They will attempt to reach the 14,411-foot summit Wednesday morning.

Mora and Goodell arrived Tuesday at Camp Muir at the 10,080-foot level. Arriving several hours ahead of them were Silvi and KING 5 photojournalist Pete Cassam.

Guide Peter Whittaker said Mora and Goodell spent about 5 hours Monday training in wind and fog. He and fellow climbing expert Ed Viesturs are leading the climb for charity that also includes Seahawks chief executive Tod Leiweke.

"Gotta say the commish performed. He is a good listener and grasped mountaineering basics reasonably well," Whittaker told The Associated Press in an e-mail.

"When you're led by Peter Whittaker and Ed Viesturs, you're in pretty good hands," said Mora.

King 5 Sports Director Paul Silvi and photojournalist Pete Cassam at Camp Muir on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 before attempting to summit Mount Rainier.

The group is planning to start for the summit after midnight. Silvi reports there’s a chance of snowfall during the final stage of the climb, so that may be a factor into whether they reach the top. Only about half of the climbers who attempt to scale the mountain each year reach the top.

The climb will raise money for the United Way of King County.

The "Climb for the Community" is sponsored by the United Way of King County Response for Basic Needs. Please show your support for people in need by giving $5 and asking five friends to do the same. It's a small way to make a BIG impact in people's lives. Together, we can help keep people in their homes and food on the table during this difficult time. So give $5, $50 or $500. Any gift you give will make a difference. Please go to www.UWKC.org/climb.
