Seahawks sign Tatupu through 2015
03:39 PM PDT on Friday, March 21, 2008
KIRKLAND, Wash. - Lofa Tatupu and the Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a new contract for the Pro Bowl linebacker through the 2015 season.
The contract will pay him $42 million, including $18 million guaranteed. It includes the final two years on his original contract for the second-round selection in 2005 out of Southern California, plus six additional years that keeps Tatupu out of free agency.
"I don’t want to be anywhere else. I'm more than happy here," Tatupu said in a press conference Friday. "I don’t know what else you could ask for. I'm just grateful for the opportunity and way things have turned out."
Tatupu, the sixth linebacker taken in '05 because he was supposedly too short and too slow, this past season became the second player in Seahawks' history to be named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first three years.
Team president Tim Ruskell said they'd be in discussions about a contract extension since last summer.

"We are as proud of Lofa for what he is a as a person, and what he's done in our community," he said. "Everyone knows what we went through when we took him, we were blasted for the second round and all that … I'm proud of what he's done."
"He has not let anybody down on the field. In fact he has gone way over what anyone could expect," said Coach Mike Holmgren. "He is very much a leader of our football team."
