M's OF Morse out for season

06:56 AM PDT on Thursday, April 24, 2008

Associated Press

SEATTLE - The Seattle Mariners are going to be without outfielder Mike Morse for the remainder of the season.

The team announced yesterday the 26-year-old Morse underwent reconstructive shoulder surgery on Turesday.

Morse landed on his left, non-throwing shoulder while attempting a diving catch with his arm outstretched April 13 in a game against the Los Angeles Angels.

Tests revealed a dislocated shoulder, and team medical director Dr. Edward Khalfayan found a torn labrum and performed a shoulder reconstruction yesterday.

Morse has been scheduled for a six-month rehabilitation program before a return to full activity. Team trainer Rick Griffin says Morse should be able to start swinging a bat again in approximately late August or September.

Manager John McLaren says Morse is out for the season after appearing in just five games.

Willie Bloomquist will continue to take Morse's role as Seattle's starting right fielder against left-handers in a platoon with Brad Wilkerson, who was signed in January as a free agent from Texas.

Morse was 2-for-9 with a double and had three starts this season. He spent most of the last two seasons with Triple-A Tacoma, but is out of options to the minor leagues
