ALABAMA:

SENATE _ Conservative Republican Jeff Sessions beat Democratic state auditor Susan Parker, who got little help from national party.

GOVERNOR _ Undecideds loomed large in tight, nasty race between Democratic incumbent Don Siegelman and Republican Rep. Bob Riley.

HOUSE _ Old: 5R, 2D. Third District turned into national battleground, as Democrats sought to gain seat for Joe Turnham in close race with GOP state Rep. Mike Rogers.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 67D, 38R. Old Senate: 24D, 11R.

PROPOSITIONS _ Create rainy day fund for state budget.

HE'S BAAACK _ Charles Martin, a Democrat when he won and lost a seat on the Public Service Commission, sought to regain post as Republican.

ALASKA:

ARIZONA:

GOVERNOR _ GOP stronghold a surprise battleground for Democratic Attorney General Janet Napolitano, Republican Matt Salmon.

PROPOSITIONS _ Measure to join California and Arizona in replacing bilingual education with intensive English-immersion program.

HIGH HOPES _ Denis Berckefeldt, part-time actor, acknowledged he was just holding ballot line for Democrats in 3rd Congressional District bid. But he picked out a house in the district, just in case.

QUOTABLE _ "You can always count on me to say something outlandish." _ Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo, hardliner on immigration who demanded that Mexican honors student seeking financial help in Colorado be sent home.

CONNECTICUT:

GOVERNOR _ Republican John G. Rowland won a third term against Bill Curry, who lost to him in 1994 and then worked in the Clinton White House.

HOUSE _ Old: 3D, 3R. New: 2D, 3R. Loses 1. Rep. Nancy Johnson, a Republican, defeated fellow incumbent Rep. Jim Maloney, a Democrat, for the new 5th District.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 100D, 51R. Old Senate: 21D, 15R.

ONE BIG, HAPPY FAMILY _ Relatives of Republican state Rep. Dennis Cleary, angered over a probate matter, took out newspaper advertisement: "We are tired of Dennis ... Are you?"

QUOTABLE _ "She comes to our union meetings, she comes to our retirement parties. And she wears our hat when she gets there." _ Jeff Merrow, business manager of Laborers' International Union Local 611, on union's endorsement of Johnson.

DELAWARE:

SENATE _ Democrat Joseph Biden wins state-record sixth term in rematch with Republican Ray Clatworthy.

HOUSE _ Old: 1R. Michael Castle also coasts to a sixth term, beating Democrat Mike Miller.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 15D, 26R. Old Senate: 13D, 8R.

IRON MAN _ Castle, a former state representative, state senator, lieutenant governor and two-term governor, has never lost an election.

QUOTABLE _ "This and my first campaign are probably the two most pleasing and it sounds strange to say, humbling, experiences that I've had. To win when I was 29, and then to win when I'm 59 is a pretty big deal for me," Biden, reacting to victory.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA:

MAYOR _ Anthony A. Williams overcame ethics and petition problems to grab a second term in rematch against Republican Carol Schwartz.

HOUSE _ Eleanor Holmes Norton a cinch for re-election as city's congressional delegate.

DEMOCRAT BY CHOICE _ Williams won his party's nomination with a write-in campaign _ and also won the Republican primary in same manner. But he declined the GOP line.

QUOTABLE _ "I have no regrets. I'm glad we did this." _ Schwartz, who began campaign only about six weeks ago.

FLORIDA:

GOVERNOR _ Republican Gov. Jeb Bush, the president's brother, beat Democrat Bill McBride to become state's only Republican governor to win re-election.

HOUSE _ Old: 15R, 8D. Gains 2. One winner: Former Secretary of State Katherine Harris, famous and infamous from 2000 presidential imbroglio.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 77R, 43D. Old Senate: 25R, 15D.

PROPOSITIONS _ Amend constitution to reduce public school class sizes, ban most smoking in public buildings, ban the crating of pregnant pigs.

OOPS _ State Senate candidate Frank Mann sent mailers criticizing Democratic opponent David Aronberg for winning a $300,000 settlement from a school district. Turns out it was another lawyer named David Aronberg. Mann and the GOP apologized.

QUOTABLE _ "Does that mean you're better than George?" _ Former first lady Barbara Bush to son Jeb, comparing incoming numbers with brother's Florida performance in 2000.

GEORGIA:

SENATE _ Republican Rep. Saxby Chambliss, his district broken up by Democrat-controlled Legislature, made strong push to unseat Democrat Max Cleland.

GOVERNOR _ Republican Sonny Perdue swam against a perpetual tide in race against Gov. Roy Barnes _ Democrats have held century-long stranglehold on governor's mansion.

HOUSE _ Old: 8R, 3D. Gains 2. Democrats hoped to take 7-6 lead, including five blacks _ most by any state ever.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 105D, 74R, 1I. Old Senate: 33D, 23R.

PROPOSITIONS _ Amend constitution to create program for voluntary sterilization of cats and dogs, funded by license-plate fees.

STILL SERVING _ Ninth statewide election for Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin, first appointed in 1969.

QUOTABLE _ "I'm the individual that has a lived a life that will not embarrass my wife and my children." _ Republican congressional candidate Max Burns, whose opponent, Champ Walker Jr., fathered a child with his wife before their marriage.

HAWAII:

GOVERNOR _ With Republican Linda Lingle and Democrat Mazie Hirono, Hawaiians knew they might elect their first Republican since 1959, but they surely would get their first woman governor.

HOUSE _ Old: 2D. Republican Bob McDermott was the only living major-party candidate in the 2nd District, but Patsy Mink _ still on the ballot, though she died Sept. 28 _ still favored to win.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 31D, 20R. Old Senate: 22D, 3R.

PROPOSITIONS _ Amend constitution to allow prosecutors to submit documents directly to a judge to determine if there is sufficient evidence for trial, instead of going through preliminary proceeding or grand jury.

A SAD BALANCE _ Mink had $185,000 in her campaign chest when she died; plans are to give between $5,000 and $10,000 of it to the Straub Clinic & Hospital, where she died of viral pneumonia.

QUOTABLE _ "All they talked about was people, people, people. But it seems the only people on their mind are the people they have in office and those who benefit from state contracts." _ State Senate Minority Leader Sam Slom on Democrats' four-decade domination of Hawaii politics.

IDAHO:

SENATE _ Republican Larry Craig re-elected to third term over Democrat Alan Blinken, former Wall Street investment banker.

GOVERNOR _ Democratic newspaper publisher Jerry Brady battled state's conservative bent in challenge to Republican Gov. Dirk Kempthorne.

HOUSE _ Old: 2R. Freshman incumbent Republican Butch Otter fending off strong effort by former Democratic U.S. Attorney Betty Richardson.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 61R, 9D. Old Senate: 32R, 3D.

PROPOSITIONS _ Reinstate statewide term limits.

WHAT PRICE GLORY _ Republican James Risch spent more than $350,000 of his own money on campaign for lieutenant governor, office with no power that pays just $26,000 a year.

QUOTABLE _ "The great news is that, as a good Republican, I clearly veered to the right when I was thrown." _ Idaho House Speaker Bruce Newcomb after he suffered internal injuries when he was thrown from a horse two days before the election.

ILLINOIS:

SENATE _ First-term Democrat Dick Durbin eased past underfunded, little-known, similarly named Republican Jim Durkin. Durbin TV ads reminded voters how to spell his name.

GOVERNOR _ Rod Blagojevich elected first Democratic governor in 25 years, helped by attacks tying Republican Jim Ryan to scandal-plagued Gov. George Ryan.

HOUSE _ Old: 10D, 10R. Loses 1. Redistricting set up one hot race between incumbents: Republican John Shimkus vs. Democrat David Phelps.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House 62D, 56R. Old Senate: 32R, 27D.

FAMILY CLOUT _ Blagojevich and attorney general candidate Lisa Madigan counted on powerful relatives for an extra boost: Blagojevich's father-in-law is powerful Chicago Alderman Dick Mell; Madigan's father is House Speaker and Democratic Party chairman Michael Madigan.

QUOTABLE _ "We got a call of a drunk election official in Cicero and that person was removed. I don't know if anybody did a Breathalyzer." _ Cook County elections spokesman Scott Burnham.

INDIANA:

HOUSE _ Old: 6R, 4D. New: 6R, 3D. Loses 1. Republican Chris Chocola defeated former U.S. Rep. Jill Long Thompson in 2nd District in a pinstripes-vs.-populist contest saturated with attack ads.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 53D, 47R. Old Senate: 32R, 18D. New Senate: Remains the same.

HEARTBREAK HOTEL _ Republican Bruce Borders, an Elvis impersonator and former Jasonville mayor, lost to Democrat Alan Chowning for state House seat vacated by Speaker John Gregg.

QUOTABLE _ "I'm glad that it's over. To not admit that would be less than candid. And I'm hoping that the other side learned from this." _ Democratic U.S. Rep. Julia Carson, who survived a tight bid for re-election to a fourth term.

IOWA:

SENATE _ Tom Harkin, chairman of Senate Agriculture Committee, trying to swat down challenge by Rep. Greg Ganske, a plastic surgeon.

GOVERNOR _ Tom Vilsack sought second term over moneyed Republican lawyer Doug Gross.

HOUSE _ Old: 4R, 1D. Rep. Jim Leach, a moderate first elected 26 years ago, encountered unexpectedly strong support for Democratic opponent Julie Thomas, a Cedar Rapids pediatrician campaigning on social issues.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 56R, 44D. Old Senate: 29R, 21 D.

PROPOSITIONS _ Eleven counties voted on reauthorizing casino gambling.

ALL IN THE FAMILY _ Four-term Republican state Rep. Jamie Van Fossen had an older protege _ his father, retired police officer James Van Fossen, making first bid for the Legislature.

QUOTABLE _ "I'm going hunting. You've got to have some fun. There's been too much of this serious stuff going on. Maybe we could just take a day off from the campaign." _ Harkin, inviting Ganske to hunt pheasants _ and at the same time shoring up support among gun owners.

KANSAS:

SENATE _ Republican Pat Roberts won second term in cakewalk with only token, third-party opposition.

GOVERNOR _ Democrats grabbed governor's mansion in predominantly Republican state. Kathleen Sebelius beat Republican Tim Shallenburger to replace GOP Gov. Bill Graves.

HOUSE _ Old: 1D, 3R. Top contest pitted Democrat incumbent Dennis Moore against Republican newcomer Adam Taff in GOP-dominated 3rd District.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 46D,79R; Old Senate: 30R,10D.

NEVER GIVE UP _ House Majority Leader Shari Weber lost GOP primary to Bill Kassebaum, son of former U.S. Sen. Nancy Kassebaum Baker, but persisted with write-in campaign.

QUOTABLE _ "The roads in Missouri were much more terrifying to me than the attacks on the World Trade Center, because I really did think my life was far more at risk." _ Sebelius, who later apologized for the remark.

KENTUCKY:

SENATE _ Mitch McConnell became first Kentucky Republican elected to four consecutive terms, trouncing Democrat newcomer Lois Combs Weinberg.

HOUSE _ Old: 5R, 1D. Republican Anne Northup won a fourth term in her majority Democrat district with campaign help from GOP bigwigs, including President Bush (twice) and House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 66D, 34R. Old Senate: 20R, 18D.

PROPOSITIONS _ Constitutional amendment approved to ratify creation of Family Courts to exclusively handle domestic legal matters.

NAME GAME _ Paul Patton, candidate for chief executive in Taylor County, said he's had no problem differentiating himself from Gov. Paul Patton. Unlike the governor, the retired pastor said he never had a sex scandal.

QUOTABLE _ "The Northup campaign sent out an SOS call to the mother ship, and that's the reason he's here." _ Northup opponent Jack Conway, explaining Bush's visit to district.

LOUISIANA:

SENATE _ Democrat Mary Landrieu faced Dec. 7 runoff if she failed to get 50 percent in race that included three Republicans.

HOUSE _ Old: 2D, 5R. Fifth District seat, vacant because of Republican John Cooksey's run for Senate, drew large field and seemed destined for runoff.

PROPOSITIONS _ Amend constitution to swap "temporary" sales taxes for restructured income tax.

DIAPER HEAD _ National Republicans shied away from supporting Cooksey's Senate bid because of his remark after Sept. 11 attacks: Police, he said, should stop anyone with "a diaper on his head."

QUOTABLE _ "There are no potholes on the information highway but there are on I-10 and I-49, which isn't finished yet." _ Tony Perkins, conservative Republican candidate for Senate.

MAINE:

SENATE _ Moderate Republican freshman incumbent Susan Collins comfortably beat back challenge by state Sen. Chellie Pingree, a liberal Democrat.

GOVERNOR _ Four-way contest to replace independent Angus King: Democrat John Baldacci vs. Republican Peter Cianchette vs. Green Independent Jonathan Carter vs. independent John Michael.

HOUSE _ Old: 2D. Tight race in 2nd District, where Republican Kevin Raye, longtime aide to Sen. Olympia Snowe, faced Democrat Mike Michaud, veteran state legislator.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 89D, 61R, 1I. Old Senate: 19D, 15R, 1I.

PROPOSITIONS _ Amend constitution to give state Transportation Department more flexibility in borrowing.

VOTING WITH THE FISHES _ Ethnic organizations complained about Carter ad questioning Baldacci's opposition to casino gambling. They saw ethnic stereotyping in announcer's script: "If he flipped he can flop, bada-bing, bada-boom, know what I mean?"

QUOTABLE _ "Six years ago, you took a leap of faith and elected me to be your United States senator. Since that day, I've worked as hard as I can to justify the confidence you placed in me." _ Collins to supporters.

MARYLAND:

GOVERNOR _ Republican Rep. Robert Ehrlich defeated Democrat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who hoped to be first member of Kennedy family elected governor.

HOUSE _ Old: 4D, 4R. New: 6D, 2R. Democratic state Sen. Christopher Van Hollen defeated liberal Republican incumbent Constance Morella.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 106D, 35R. Old Senate: 35D, 13R.

SEA CHANGE _ Lifelong Republican and retired Adm. Charles Larson switched parties to run for lieutenant governor on Townsend's Democratic ticket.

QUOTABLE _ "It is great to be at Coppin State University." _ A tired Townsend, greeting a crowd at Bowie State University in the last week of the campaign.

MASSACHUSETTS:

SENATE _ No surprise: Victory for Democrat John Kerry, the first incumbent Massachusetts senator in 80 years with no major-party opposition.

GOVERNOR _ Olympics guru Mitt Romney, a Republican, took five-way race to replace Republican acting Gov. Jane Swift.

HOUSE _ Old: 10D. New: Unchanged. Democrats kept all seats, with incumbents winning all four contested races.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 134D, 22R, 4 vacancies. Old Senate: 34D, 6R, 1 vacancy.

PROPOSITIONS _ Eliminate state income tax.

MORE ALTERNATIVES _ Thirty-four third-party and independent candidates competed for the Legislature this year, a 20-year high.

QUOTABLE _ "We took on an entrenched machine and we won." _ Romney.

MICHIGAN:

SENATE _ Democrat Carl Levin breezed to fifth term against Republican state Rep. Andrew Rocky Raczkowski, who couldn't raise enough money to run a single TV ad.

GOVERNOR _ Democratic Attorney General Jennifer Granholm defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus to become state's first female governor.

HOUSE _ Old: 9D, 7R. Loses 1. GOP-controlled redistricting and one less seat expected to give Republicans 9-6 edge.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 58R, 52D. Old Senate: 23R, 15D.

PROPOSITIONS _ Require 90 percent of state tobacco settlement go to hospitals, nursing homes and anti-smoking programs, rather than college scholarship program and general fund budget.

DYNAMIC DUO _ Former Michigan Militia leader Joseph Pilchak and his wife, Clara, a home-school advocate, ran for governor and lieutenant governor on the U.S. Taxpayers Party ticket. And lost.

MINNESOTA:

SENATE _ Former Vice President Walter Mondale a last-minute Democratic sub for the late Paul Wellstone in crucial battle against former St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman.

GOVERNOR _ Three-way steel-cage match to replace Independent Jesse Ventura: Democrat Roger Moe vs. Republican Tim Pawlenty vs. Independent Tim Penny.

HOUSE _ Old: 5D, 3R. Embattled incumbent Democrat Bill Luther plagued by disclosure that his staff backed a bogus candidate to sap support from Republican John Kline.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 63D, 71R. Old Senate: 39D, 27R, 1I.

MAN FOR ALL PARTIES _ Coleman, Democrat-turned-Republican, chaired President Clinton's Minnesota effort in 1996.

PROPOSITIONS _ Voters rejected amending constitution to increase term of trial judges to six years.

SUPREME MUDSLINGING _ Race for state Supreme Court included one candidate who hit an unruly patron at a disco with a whiskey bottle in the 1970s, another who pleaded no contest to driving under the influence after wrecking his Camaro.

QUOTABLE _ "Tonight we sent a message to national Democrats: Don't mess with Mississippi." _ Pickering.

MISSOURI:

SENATE _ Democrat Jean Carnahan, appointed to the seat won posthumously by her late husband, Mel Carnahan, in real battle against Republican Jim Talent, a former congressman.

HOUSE _ Old: 5R, 4D. Redistricting believed to have favored most incumbents, especially House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt of St. Louis.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 87D, 76R. Old Senate: 18R, 16D.

PROPOSITIONS _ Proposal to increase cigarette tax to 72 cents a pack from 17 cents and increase other tobacco taxes by 20 percent, with the revenues to go largely to health care.

FELON FOR AUDITOR _ Al Hanson, convicted of felony theft in 1978 in Minnesota, won the Republican nomination for Missouri auditor _ and was then disavowed by party leaders.

QUOTABLE _ "History has an eerie way of repeating itself." _ Reggie Bumgarner, labor leader and Carnahan supporter, responding to Minnesota Sen. Paul Wellstone's death in a plane crash _ two years after Mel Carnahan died similarly.

MONTANA:

SENATE _ Four-term Democratic incumbent Max Baucus easily defeated Republican challenger Mike Taylor, who abandoned campaigning for two weeks over Democratic ad that he said made him look like a gay hairdresser.

HOUSE _ Old: 1R. New: 1R. Republican Denny Rehberg won second term as state's lone congressman.

LEGISLATURE _ Old House: 57R, 42D, 1I. Old Senate: 31R,19D.

LOW MARKS _ Election-eve poll indicated Montanans have little use for their Legislature _ 33 percent gave it good marks, 63 percent poor.

QUOTABLE _ "I went home and I prayed _ for my family, my friends, and for all people of Montana who were hurt by the slander and suggestions about me. The message, then, became clear. ... If I must go down, it should be in a good cause." _ Taylor, on why he re-entered the Senate race.

NEBRASKA:

SENATE _ Republican star Chuck Hagel cruised to win in bid for second term against unemployed Democrat Charlie Matulka.

GOVERNOR _ Republican Gov. Mike Johanns, who raised more than $1 million despite state budget crisis, trounced challenger Stormy Dean, who got only pennies from Democratic donors.

HOUSE _ Old: 3R. Democrats fielded a candidate in only one race _ Internet millionaire Jim Simon, challenging two-term Republican Lee Terry.
