SHREVEPORT, La. – If you want to see Edgar Winter and his band in the Dallas area, good seats will cost at least $50 per person. At the Red River Revel in Shreveport-Bossier City, however, you can see Mr. Winter and other entertainers and artists for $10 or less. The Revel, in its 33rd year, will be Oct. 4-11. It's a pleasant balance of arts, entertainment and food. Plus, it's a bargain, and food sales benefit local charities or organizations. The Revel was started as a one-time gift to the city from the Junior League. It's now produced by thousands of community volunteers. In addition to Mr. Winter, this year you can see Bucky Covington, Stephen Cochran and Grammy nominees Lisa Haley and Trout Fishing in America. Rock 'n' roll, country, jazz, zydeco and R&B entertainers will perform. Festival attendees will be able to shop at more than 100 artists' booths for paintings, pottery, photography, glass, wood carvings, jewelry, spices and scents. They also will be able to indulge their own artistic leanings by contributing to a huge mosaic wall. A major goal of the Red River Revel Arts Festival is arts education for children. One area is dedicated to children's activities. Beyond the Revel are Shreveport-Bossier City's casinos, unusual museums and extensive public art, including five large murals. The Once in a Millennium Moon mural covers more than 25,000 square feet and is the nation's largest publicly funded mural. Kevin Kalley is a Dallas freelance writer.
