LaGrande schools to trim budget

11/21/2008

Associated Press

La Grande School District officials will have to cut about $300,000 from their 2008-09 budget because of the grim state revenue forecast.

But Superintendent Larry Glaze said he believes the cuts can be made without staff reductions.

He said the district would trim the money from its budget through freezing all nonessential spending. He said travel would be greatly reduced and that no new nonessential equipment or supplies will be purchased.

Glaze said he believes that no program reductions will be necessary. The state announced Wednesday that it is facing a projected $142 million revenue shortfall for 2008-09. In response, Gov. Ted Kulongoski used his executive authority to order agencies to make cuts.
