New York Senator Charles Schumer says he is "very optimistic" that Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley can win against incumbent Senator Gordon Smith this fall.
Schumer, who heads the Democrats' campaign committee, called Oregon a "moderately pro-Democratic state" and noted that President Bush lost the state in 2000 and 2004.
Schumer said Merkley, the Oregon House speaker, "had a strong quarter" financially. Merkley raised as much money as Smith in the three months ended June 30, even though Smith has an overall advantage in campaign finances.
Schumer spoke at a Wednesday news conference.
