Boeing and the machinists union officially opened talks today in Seattle on a contract covering 27,000 workers.
Most are in the Puget Sound area. The union also represents Boeing workers in Portland, southern California and Wichita, Kansas.
The current contract expires Sept. 3.
In a few months Boeing will begin negotiating with a second large union, SPEEA (the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace). That contract covering 21,000 employees expires Dec. 3.
