SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- The Oregon Senate has approved a $5.8 billion school-funding plan, pushing the Legislature closer to a stand off with Gov. Ted Kulongoski.

The Senate voted 21 to 6 for the budget which gives the K-12 system $5.8 billion with the possibility of another $200 million in 2010 should economic conditions improve.
The governor has threatened to veto the measure if it passes the House. Kulongoski would rather see a $5.6 billion budget with a possible $400 million available later. Legislative leadership says that leaves too much uncertainty for educators.
Based on the vote count today, it looks as though the Senate would have the two-thirds majority to override a veto.
