Bill to block Metolius resort narrowly fails in Oregon House

SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- The Oregon House has narrowly rejected a measure to ban most development in the Metolius River basin in Central Oregon.
The bill, which fell a single vote short of passing, would have blocked construction of a proposed 450-unit destination resort four miles from the river.
Supporters of the bill said the Metolius is a unique place that deserves special protection.
But opponents said the Legislature should not usurp a local land use decision made by Jefferson County officials, who have tentatively approved the project. They also said the Legislature shouldn't kill a project that would create 100 full-time jobs in the hard-hit rural county.
The measure could be brought back up for reconsideration in the House on Wednesday.
