PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Membership in Oregon's Democratic party is surging in advance of the primary election on May 20th.
The party started the year with about 70,000 more registered voters than the Republicans and has doubled its advantage since.
As of Friday registration totals stood at 826,984 Democrats to 685,344 Republicans.
Since Jan. 2, elections officials have registered more than 112,000 voters, roughly divided between new voters and those who have changed their party affiliation.
About two-thirds of the party switchers have reregistered as Democrats. Oregonians who will be aged 18 by May 20 have until Tuesday evening to register. Oregon has just over two million registered voters.
