Timeline of events in Adams-Breedlove scandal

Spring and Summer 2005:
March 24 -Sam Adams meets Beau Breedlove, a legislative intern, in the office of Rep. Kim Thatcher. Adams gets a card with Breedlove’s phone number and a brief note.
March 31 – Adams and Breedlove start exchanging cell phone calls and text messages. Adams tells investigators they were romantic in nature.
April – On an unspecified April day, Breedlove and Adams meet for lunch at the Macaroni Grill. Adams characterizes this to investigators as a romantic date. Adams says he learns from Breedlove that he is under 18. Adams tells Breedlove there is no chance of a romance because of that. Breedlove says that Adams kissed him after the date. Adams says he doesn’t remember, but that such kissing was not uncommon with this friends.
June – Breedlove attends a First Thursday event at City Hall. Breedlove claims that after the event, he and Adams passionately kissed in a City Hall restroom. Adams flatly denies this happened. They did go out to dinner together after the event, but both say there was no further intimate contact.
June 25 – Adams attends Breedlove’s 18th birthday party at Breedlove’s parents house in Salem.
Adams and Breedlove have a sexual relationship for about two months, according to an admission from the mayor. More: Mayor's apology
Summer 2007:
-- Reports begin to circulate during the mayoral campaign that Adams had an affair with Breedlove. Pearl District developer Bob Ball, another gay man contemplating a run for mayor, goes public with details of the affair. Also: Adams had sex with teenager
September and October, 2007:
-- In an open letter to Portlanders, Adams, now a mayoral candidate, vehemently denies allegations he had an affair with Breedlove. Adams tells KGW the allegations are among “the worst kinds of smears you can make against a gay guy.” Details: Adams letter to Portlanders
-- Commissioner Randy Leonard defends Adams against the allegations and former Mayor Vera Katz calls them “smear tactics.”
May 20, 2008:
-- Sam Adams elected as mayor of Portland with 58 percent of vote, becoming only gay mayor of a top 30 metropolitan U.S. city. Background: Adams elected mayor
Jan. 1, 2009:
-- Sam Adams sworn in as mayor of Portland.
Jan. 19, 2009:
-- Sam Adams admits to the Willamette Week that he had a relationship with Breedlove. More: Scandal shocks Portland
Jan. 20, 2009:
-- Sam Adams returns early from the inaugural celebrations for President Barack Obama in Washington DC and holds a press conference fully admitting to a sexual relationship with Breedlove. Adams apologizes for lying and coaching Breedlove to lie about the relationship.
-- Commissioner Leonard and Police Chief Sizer call for third-party investigation into whether any laws were broken in Adams’ cover-up of the relationship.
Jan. 21, 2009:
-- Oregon Attorney General John Kroger announces his office will conduct a criminal investigation into the Adams-Breedlove affair. Also: AG to investigate
-- The Oregonian and Portland Tribune publish editorials stating that Adams should resign as mayor.
-- Just Out, the largest gay publication in Oregon, calls for Adams to resign.
-- Portland Business Journal calls for Adams’ resignation.
-- Web page to recall Sam Adams launched.
Jan. 22, 2009:
-- Online grassroots groups form to support Sam Adams. More: Support for Adams grows
-- Adams says he will make a resignation decision “within days.”
Jan. 23, 2009:
-- Rallies and protests in support of and in opposition to Mayor Sam Adams take place at City Hall.
Jan. 24, 2009:
-- Beau Breedlove tells The Oregonian that he and Adams kissed prior to his 18th birthday, but corroborates Adams position that no sex occurred until after he became legal.
Jan. 25, 2009:
-- Adams releases video statement apologizing to Portland and announcing he will not resign.
Jan. 26, 2009:
-- Mayor Adams returns to work at City Hall.
June 22, 2009:
-- Attorney General's office completes its investigation into the Mayor's conduct, finding no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
