Rim drive at Crater Lake reopens for summer

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- In a sure sign that summer's here, the entire 33-mile Rim Drive around Crater Lake is now open.

Crater Lake officials say the opening is earlier than usual because of lower-than-average snowfall and fewer rock falls.
Ranger-guided two-hour boat tours of the lake are expected to open Thursday.
Formed by the explosion of a volcano thousands of years ago, Crater Lake is the nation's deepest lake.
