Coast Guard rescue crews managed to save two fishermen whose 36-foot boat was taking on water just 1,000 yards from where the Siuslaw River empties into the Pacific Ocean near Florence.

The fishing vessel, called the Hot Tuna, sank after the crew was transferred onto a Coast Guard motor lifeboat.

The crew called the Coast Guard just after 6 a.m. to report that their boat was sinking. One of two motor lifeboats that responded tried to keep the vessel afloat by pumping out water but that effort failed.

No injuries were reported.
