KGW is the NBC affiliate in Portland, Oregon serving Oregon and Southwest Washington. The station has been honored as station of the year by the Oregon Association of Broadcasters for 10 of the last 11 years. Its companion website, KGW.com, is recognized as best television website by the Oregon Association of Broadcasters and best news website by the Associated Press. KGW provides programming on four channels. Its main channel, 8.1, carries NBC programming and over six hours a day of local news and local programming. The Live Well Network is broadcast on 8.2, and the Spanish language network, Estrella, is telecast on 8.3. KGW also operates a low-power station, KGWZ. KGW is owned and operated by Sander Operating Company III LLC (D/B/A KGW Television) and is a part of Sander Holdings Company, a limited-liability company which owns three television stations in three markets. The Sander stations receive support services from Gannett Co., Inc. through shared services and similar arrangements.
KGW-TV first went on the air in December, 1956. It was the first Portland television station to broadcast its local news in full high definition. Reflecting its commitment to innovation and community interaction, it opened a second high definition studio, the KGW Studio on the Square, in March 2009. Modeled after the Today Show’s studio, the KGW Studio on the Square is located in Pioneer Courthouse Square, known affectionately by Portlanders as “Portland’s Living Room.
