Joe Smith is an award-winning journalist who has worked with news organization in Massachusetts, Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, Nevada, Florida and now Oregon.
Before joining KGW NewsChannel 8, Smith was prime anchor for Florida's News Channel, where he earned praise for his insightful coverage of the 2000 Florida election and recount. He also anchored a daily business program and interviewed Florida political leaders on a live, nightly news and public affairs program.
Smith's business experience includes serving as co-anchor and reported for "Business in Nevada," a statewide program produced by KLVX-TV (PBS) in Las Vegas.
Smith spent six years as host and executive producer of "Smith & Company" on Milwaukee Public Television in Wisconsin. For his work on that program, he received an Emmy Award from the Chicago Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In 2005, he was awarded an Emmy for writing from the Seattle chapter of NATAS.
In addition to his television work, Smith has been active in the communities in which he as worked. He was elected president of the Milwaukee Press Club in Wisconsin; he was the only broadcaster asked to serve as a communications consultant to the Wisconsin State Legislature as it explored plans for continuing television coverage of the House and Senate.
Before joining Milwaukee Public Television, Smith worked at WKEF-TV (NBC) in Dayton, Ohio. As Vice President in charge of local programming, he served as host/producer of "Contact," a weekly news and public affairs call-in program. He also hosted and produced news and entertainment specials.
In addition, Smith was host/producer for information programming for WXEX-TV (ABC) in Richmond, Virginia and WWLP-TV (NBC) in Springfield Massachusetts.
