BEIRUT (AP) — It's been a fourth straight day of artillery fire between Syria and Turkey, in the aftermath of Wednesday's shelling that killed five civilians in a Turkish border town.
The exchange of fire is adding to fears that the civil war in Syria will erupt into a regional conflict.
According to Turkish media, Today's cross-border exchange began when two mortar shells from Syria landed in rural areas near a Turkish village, prompting return fire from Turkey. A third shell later hit near another village, and officials say Turkish troops fired back.
No casualties are reported.
The shelling took place as Syrian rebels clashed with President Bashar Assad's forces near the border.
Turkey and Syria were once strong allies, but the relationship has deteriorated sharply since the uprising against Assad began last year. Turkey is one of the harshest critics of Assad's crackdown on opponents.
