BEIJING (AP) — At least 16 students have been killed and three other people are missing after a landslide toppled an elementary school building in a mountainous area of southwestern China.
The official Xinhua (shihn-wah) News Agency reports 18 students were buried at the school, while another victim was buried in a house. The local government says about 2,000 local people, medics, police and military personnel are trying to rescue the victims, but Xinhua say 16 students are confirmed dead.
More than 800 people living near a river blocked by the landslide have been evacuated.
The landslide took place in an area that was devastated by a deadly earthquake last month.
Though today is a holiday across China, the students were in school to make up for days missed after the quake.
