BAGHDAD (AP) — Officials say Shiite neighborhoods, security forces and other targets in multiple cities have been hit by coordinated insurgent bombings today that killed at5 least 23 people and wounded at least 82.

Insurgents have been using the tactic with the apparent goal of rekindling widespread sectarian conflict and undermining public confidence in the beleaguered government.

One deadly attack came in the town of Taji, a former al-Qaida stronghold just north of Baghdad.

Officials say the wave of attacks stretched from the restive but oil-rich city of Kirkuk in Iraq's north to the southern Shiite town of Kut.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but car bombs are a hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Iraqi forces have failed to stop the attacks that continue to claim lives almost daily.
