SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — At least five fishermen are dead and 10 others are missing after rough seas from a powerful typhoon off the South Korean coast smashed two fishing ships into rocks.
Another 12 fishermen were saved in a daring rescue and others swam or were washed ashore.
A coast guard spokesman says rescuers used a special gun to shoot rope to one ship so officers could pull themselves over and bring the fishermen back to shore.
Separately, at least three other people died as the typhoon knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of South Koreans, canceled flights and temporarily halted joint war games by U.S. and South Korean military forces.
North Korea, which is still struggling to rebuild from massive floods and a devastating drought before that, is next in the typhoon's path.
