MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's Supreme Court is coming under fire from a Roman Catholic archbishop for upholding a law allowing gays to marry in the country's capital.
Mexican Cardinal Norberto Rivera says the ruling is "immoral." He says it's wrong to go against Christian doctrine that recognizes only marriages between a man and a woman.
In a statement, he says, "The church cannot fail to call evil evil."
On Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of gay marriages in Mexico City under a law passed by the state legislature. Mexico's federal government had sought to nullify the law.
The city government said last week that 320 same-sex couples had married since March.
