Trump supporters fire off cannon in Keizer to celebrate election result

Cannon lit off in Keizer for Trump's win

KEIZER, Ore. -- One man was arrested and two people cited in Keizer after a cannon was fired off to celebrate Donald Trump's victory on Tuesday night.

Several people called 911 after hearing a loud explosion in the area of 7th Avenue Northeast.

Police responded and noticed a large plume of smoke in the air behind a home at 5130 7th Avenue Northeast. Officers started talking to a woman who was in the driveway of the home and were confronted by the woman's boyfriend, 21-year-old Triston Poteet.

Poteet grabbed one of the officers during the confrontation and was taken into custody for physical harassment and interfering with a police officer.

Officers determined that another man at the home, 45-year-old Michael Dingle, had caused the explosion by firing off a cannon to celebrate Trump's victory. He told police nothing was shot from the cannon, that he had only packed it full of powder and fired it.

Dingle said he hid the cannon in his garage when police and fire units arrived. He said the cannon was made and given to him by his father and he was afraid police would take it away if they found it.

Dingle and the woman, 20-year-old Velda Housley, were both cited and released, Dingle for second-degree disorderly conduct, and Housley for interfering with a police officer.

Nobody was injured in the explosion.
