Online program pays $1 million to couples who stay married
08:08 AM PST on Tuesday, February 19, 2008
ISSAQUAH, Wash. - After the birth of their daughter, JohnE and Anya Phillips, like so many new parents, started spending thousands of dollars on baby products.
But all this spending now might one day help them become millionaires. The catch? They have to stay married.
The Phillips' are members of "uTango," a program that rewards couples for their wedded bliss.
"The whole premise of this company is based on the foundation of marriage and being committed to your marriage," said uTango CEO Jim Miller. "It's the only consumer rewards program in the world that can make you a millionaire."

Miller started the company seven years ago after realizing there should be more perks to marriage than just love.
"I was looking at my in-laws and thinking: Here's a man and woman who have been married 35 years, raised four kids, put them all through school, that should be rewarded," he said.
The program targets single, engaged and newly married couples. As you spend money online through the program's 300 merchants, such as Nordstrom, Target or Home Depot, you earn Tango points.
"You can actually use that spending to plan your wedding… buy your honeymoon package, wedding rings… through our program, build up even more point value," said Miller.
Depending on the plan you choose, you can get up to $800 cash back per year.
When you reach certain marriage milestones, that's when you really cash in.

JohnE and Anya Phillips signed up for uTango in August of 2007.
You get up to $10,000 on your 10th anniversary, up to $100,000 on your 20th, and if you sign up for the most expensive plan, on your 30th, you get $1 million.
"We laugh about when we need something - we're like 'Is it on uTango? Can we get Tango points for this?'" said Anya.
For the Phillips' family, it's completely changed the way they shop. They buy almost everything online so they can rack up those points.
The plan they chose requires them to spend about $10,000 a year, which they say is easy to do, especially with a baby.
"When I started looking at it, the budgeting and looked at what we spend. That's when it was obvious that we spend way more than that," said JohnE.

So as they celebrate each wedding anniversary, the Phillips' will be that much closer to being rewarded for their loyalty, as customers and as husband and wife.
"If in 30 years, we get a million dollars for continuing to be with uTango, that would be fabulous. We certainly wouldn't turn it down," said Anya.
It's free to join uTango, but you must be single, engaged, or married less than three years. And if you get divorced, all bets are off.
