Special report: Rapid recovery face lifts a faster fix

09:28 AM PST on Friday, February 1, 2008

By JANE SMITH, kgw.com

The turning point for Diane O'Neal came when she saw pictures of herself at her daughter's wedding.

"I noticed the jowl line and the neck," said the 61-year-old.

She wanted a more youthful look, one she couldn’t get through beauty creams or exercise.

"Things like this you can't really fix, it has to be done with a procedure," said O’Neal.

It’s called a rapid recovery lift. Instead of weeks of recovery with a traditional facelift, the rapid lift gets people back to work in just days.

Diane turned to Dr. David Magilke with the Portland Facial Clinic, at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.

"The hope is that you look like healthy young rested person particularly in Oregon they want to look like themselves only rested they don't want to look like they've had a great plastic surgeon working on them," said Dr. Magilke.

Dr. Magilke, a facial plastic surgeon, used a local anesthesia to help Diane recovery faster.

He removed excess skin from Diane's neck and jaw line, for an overall "lifting" of the lower face.

The incisions are limited to the front of Diane's ears and behind them. That way there won't be a lot of bruising. Because the rapid recovery lift is less invasive -- patients typically heal 50 percent faster than with a traditional facelift.

Dr. Magilke also said what makes this a rapid recovery is the use of Arnica Montana--an herbal supplement that helps to reduce swelling and bruising.

O’Neal took the supplement five days before surgery and several days after.

Two days post surgery, O’Neal said she had minimal pain.

"I didn't have any discomfort, a little the first night," she said.

Dr. Magilke removed the bandages and washed O’Neal’s hair.

O’Neal then got a lymphatic drainage massage, a feathery light technique that gets rid of toxins and helps reduce swelling.

A quick make up application to camouflage the bruising and Diane saw herself for the first time.

The sagging skin under her neck disappeared and her jaw line had more contour.

"I'm very happy with it. I'm sure by the time the swelling goes down I'll be good to go," she said.

The swelling can last for a few days, but the results about 10 years. Rapid recovery lifts cost about $7,000 on average.
