You sit down at a job interview and your potential employer says, "Tell me about yourself."
It seems like an easy enough question to answer, but to give yourself an instant edge experts say it's best to avoid giving soft responses that you might offer a casual acquaintance.
"Information like where you grew up, where you went to school, that's all on your resume," said Sheri Michalak, Talent Acquisition Manager at Daimler Trucks North America.
Michalak's job is recruiting, interviewing and hiring qualified employees. She recommends sharing personal information that's specific to the job you're trying to get.
"Try to tie that in by saying something like, 'I've always had an affinity for engineering or finance or human resources, and this job appealed to me because I have people in my family that are in the same profession," she said.
Michalak also recommended avoiding clichés when describing yourself.
"Saying things like, 'I'm a people person,' that's very general and loosey-goosey," said Michalak. "Get down to examples that actually tell us how you're going to do later on."
Michalak said no matter what question a potential employer asks, don't be afraid to take a few seconds to collect your thoughts before answering it.
"There's no rush, just take a deep breath, listen closely and answer the best you can," she said.
