PORTLAND - There's the Atkins diet, the Southbeach, WeightWatchers -- the list goes on.
There are so many diets out there to choose from. And what may work for one person may not work for another. So how do you know which is best for you?
And by "best" we mean the one that will not only take off those extra pounds but will help you keep them off.
Unfortunately, for many of us choosing a diet is anything but easy and sticking to it, well that's even harder.
With so many different eating plans out there, it's easy to fall into a "diet delirium" Take for example Arlene Meehan. She's tried diet after diet.
"Well let's see ... Atkins, WeightWatchers, that protein one where you drink liquid protein," Meehan explained.
After several failed attempts, she finally found success with WeightWatchers.
"In terms of weight loss, research has shown that it's not what diet plan you're on... it's actually that you stay with it," explained Kimra Hawk, a registered dietitian at Providence Saint Vincent Medical Center.
Hawk says the key to finding the right diet for you is, first, understanding yourself.
"There are so many diets out there it's really difficult, but I think one of the things you want to consider is your lifestyle... are you someone who likes spending time in the kitchen or do you hate spending time in the kitchen?" Hawk explained.
For example, if you're a "foodie" you probably won't want to go with a plan built around frozen or liquid meals.
Or let's say you're someone who loves pasta or grains. You're probably not going to succeed at an Atkins type diet which cuts-out carbohydrates.
"You're not going to want to give those up," she said. The bottom line: find a diet that's easy for you. U.S. News recently ranked the best and easiest-to-follow diets.
Topping the list is the Dash diet - a diet rich with grains that was originally developed to help lower blood pressure.
Coming in at number two is the TLC diet followed by the Mayo Clinic and Mediterranean diets. Rounding out the top five is WeightWatchers.
"It's so individual that I think everyone is just going to have to take a little time and do a little bit of research for themselves," said Hawk.
She says when it comes to diets weigh all your options and feel free to experiment. But don't waste time or energy on the ones that don't fit.
Hawk also says once you choose the "best diet" for you have realistic expectations. Research shows losing just ten percent of your weight greatly impacts your health.
