PORTLAND --The Black Cat Pub at Southeast Umatilla Street and 13th Avenue was demolished on Monday. The new owner closed the 78-year-old tavern on August 18 to make way for a new five-story building. Debbie Ververs worked at the bar for 22 years and lived above it for 21. “We called it the Cheers of Sellwood,” said Ververs, who was on hand for the demolition. “It was real emotional seeing them destroy what used to be my kitchen, what used to be my living room. It was surreal. But I couldn’t stop watching. I wish they’ve sold it to McMenamins.”
