Report lists most dangerous toys this holiday season

A look at the dangerous toys to avoid this holiday season

PORTLAND, Ore. --  A new report details some of the most dangerous toys this holiday season,
from toys with high levels of lead, to Internet-based toys that can invade your privacy.

The report is called Trouble in Toyland, and is the 32nd annual toy safety report and is produced by the U.S. PIRG Education Fund. It says that hazardous toys are still available on store shelves.

One warning relates to the popular fidget spinner toys, noting that some contain lead. The report shows two models of fidget spinners that contained excessive levels of lead.

"Even low levels of lead in blood have been shown to undermine IQ, attentiveness, and academic achievement," the report authors found.

Another warning is about internet-based toys. An example is “My Friend Cayla.”

The doll connects to the internet using an unsecured Bluetooth connection, say experts, and anything the child tells the doll is collected and uploaded to a website that could be vulnerable. The doll itself is also vulnerable to hackers, experts say, because of the unsecure connection.

The advocacy group noted that in the example of the 'Cayla', it has been banned in Germany for privacy violations and is also under investigation by U.S. trade officials.

The FBI has issued a warning to consumers to "consider cyber security prior to introducing smart, interactive, internet-connected toys into their homes," according to the report.

And there’s yet another warning about toys that your child could put in their mouth, and choke on.

Experts say labels are often misleading about age groups, and even though a label says its for a certain age and up, young children can still get their hands on dangerous small objects, like a balloon, and swallow them.
