SALEM -- The man accused of shooting and killing Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter was sent for a mental evaluation, Police said.

Daniel Butts, 21, was transferred to the Oregon State Hospital on Thursday, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Butts is accused of wrestling away Painter's gun in January and fatally shooting him.

The case has been on hold since his arraignment because of Butts’ disruptive behavior.
His lawyers requested the new evaluation.
