RAINIER, Ore. -- Rainier Police have a new chief after the shooting that killed former Chief Ralph Painter.

Mayor Jerry Cole said interim Greg Griffith would be sworn in at a date yet to be determined.

The mayor said at the next council meeting, commissioners hoped to have his contract done and approved.

"I want to make it special for him and his family," Cole said.

Suspect 21-year-old Daniel Butts faces aggravated murder charges in the January 5 shooting outside of a car audio shop. Butts will soon be transferred to the Oregon State Hospital for a mental evaluation.

The judge ordered the exam to determine if Butts is able to aid and assist his lawyers.
