RAINIER, Ore. – There was a huge turnout Saturday in honor of Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter, who was killed in the line of duty in January.
The Ralph Painter Memorial Run was a fundraiser for a college scholarship in his name. Painter was a lifelong runner.
His brother said the event was the result of a promise to the chief's children and his running partners from high school.
“He loved running,” Alan Painter said. “In fact, when he was killed he was training for the Portland Marathon that he promised his daughter he would run with her. So we thought this would be a great way to pay tribute to him."
The Ralph Painter scholarship is available to any high school senior in Columbia County who needs help paying for college.
