D PORTLAND -- Oregon's longest-tenured congressman will hold onto his seat after a second consecutive challenge from a Republican chemist with tea party support.

Democrat Peter DeFazio defeated Republican Art Robinson in Tuesday's election.

DeFazio represents the timber-dependent 4th Congressional District, often finding himself fending off both environmental advocates and the timber industry.

DeFazio was elected to the U.S. House in 1986.

Robinson pledged to cut taxes, increase border security and build new power plants. He challenged DeFazio in 2010 and lost handily but got financial support from tea party advocates, those who deny human involvement in climate change and home-schooling advocates.

Robinson's youngest son, Matthew Robinson, changed his registration to the Democratic Party so he could challenge DeFazio in the 2012 primary.
